Beginner's Guide to Trekking: Tips and Recommendations for Your First Adventure.

Updated: Aug 6, 2024

Trekking is a great way to connect with nature, stay active, and discover new places. However, for beginners, it can seem like an intimidating activity. This guide is designed to help you prepare for your first trekking adventure and ensuring you have a safe and rewarding experience.

What is Trekking?

Trekking is an outdoor activity that involves walking long distances in natural areas across different types of terrain. Unlike hiking, trekking usually involves longer and more challenging routes, often in mountainous regions.

The best part is that this sport has a lot of health benefits; not only improves your physical fitness but also offers mental perks such as stress reduction, improved mood, and connection with yourself and nature!

What equipment do you need for Trekking?

Investing in the right equipment is essential for a successful trekking experience. Start with trekking boots: Choose boots that offer support and traction, and are waterproof, breathable, and comfortable for long hikes. Ensure they fit snugly everywhere, tight nowhere, and leave room to wiggle your toes. Before you buy, try them on at the end of the day (when your feet are swollen) and with the socks you plan to wear. Aim to fit roughly one finger between your heel and the back of the boot.

For clothing, wear layers to adapt to different weather conditions. Opt for synthetic and merino wool materials, which dry quickly and retain warmth. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer that goes against your skin and, as needed, add an insulating mid layer and a waterproof outer shell, like a rain jacket. You can choose trekking pants with zip-off legs to adapt to changing weather conditions. Bring a waterproof trekking jacket and a breathable sweatshirt or softshell jacket in case of rain.

Your backpack should be comfortable and appropriately sized for your needs, with adjustable straps and ample room for your gear.

Finally, pack the essentials: a map, compass, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, torch, first aid kit, and plenty of water and food.

Planning Your First Route

Becoming a trekking expert starts with careful route planning. Begin by researching routes suitable for beginners; opt for well-marked trails of low to moderate difficulty. Always consult local guidebooks and maps! Consider the length of the route, elevation gain, weather conditions, and altitude level to match your physical preparation and ensure the course suits your needs. Inform someone of your itinerary before you set off.

If you're planning to trek in Colombia, keep in mind that while safety has significantly improved, there is still no developed trekking network. This means there are no detailed maps, signs, adapted paths, or standardized markings like the European GR. Therefore, we at Dinamico Travelers highly recommend always seeking a specialized guide to help you during your adventure. In some cases, the company of a local guide is required by the local or Indigenous community, and it's important to respect their land rules.

Trekking Safety

Take basic precautions before starting your journey. Carry a mobile phone with a charged battery and, if possible, a GPS. Join forums and social networking groups for advice, sharing experiences, and meeting other trekking enthusiasts.

While on the route, avoid walking alone and keep someone informed of your itinerary. Avoid large groups that exceed the carrying capacity of the area to prevent environmental impact. Use maps and compasses for navigation, stay hydrated, and eat energy foods like nuts and energy bars.

Respect local customs and methods, especially in sacred areas where a local guide may be required. Follow “Leave No Trace” principles by not disturbing local flora and fauna and taking all litter with you.

Physical and Mental Preparation

Pre-exercise: Preparing your body for trekking involves improving your cardiovascular endurance and strengthening your muscles. Engage in activities such as walking, running, or cycling to boost your stamina. Incorporate strength exercises like squats and lunges to build leg strength, which is crucial for handling uneven terrains and long hikes. Additionally, include core exercises like planks and sit-ups to improve balance and stability. Aim for a balanced fitness routine that includes flexibility exercises such as yoga or stretching to prevent injuries.

Positive Mindset: Mental preparation is just as important as physical training. Trekking can be challenging, with difficult terrains and unpredictable weather. Maintaining a positive and motivated attitude is essential for overcoming these obstacles. Visualize yourself completing the trek and savoring the journey. Set small, achievable goals along the way to keep yourself motivated. Practice mindfulness and stay present, enjoying the natural beauty around you. Remember that each step, no matter how tough, brings you closer to your goal. Embrace the challenges as part of the adventure and learn to find joy in the journey.

Nutrition and Hydration: Proper nutrition and hydration are critical for endurance and performance. Eat a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. Before the trek, consume energy-boosting foods like fruits, nuts, and whole grains. During the trek, carry high-energy snacks like trail mix, energy bars, and dried fruits. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water before, during, and after the trek. Consider carrying a water purification method, such as tablets or a portable filter, if you'll be refilling from natural sources.

Mental Resilience: Building mental resilience helps you cope with the physical and emotional demands of trekking. Practice techniques like deep breathing, meditation, and visualization to stay calm and focused. Develop problem-solving skills to handle unexpected challenges on the trail. Connect with fellow trekkers for support and encouragement, sharing experiences and tips. Remember that mental strength grows with each trek, making you more prepared for future adventures.

By combining physical preparation, mental resilience, and a positive mindset, you'll be well-equipped to tackle the challenges of trekking and fully enjoy the rewarding experience.
